Setting Some Daily Goals was a Good Thing

Setting some Daily Goals was a good thing, even though I was on vacation.  I wanted to spend some time working on this app and future updates, as well as catch up on the documentation related to the last update I posted in both iTunes and Google Play.  Having the goals helped my focus on just a few things, and assured that I had time  for some fun.  So what about tomorrow?  I have an event that I'm trying to prepare for.  I'll be spending some time with people I don't know which usually results in some social anxiety.  This will be a good test for the Event Prep tool.  I'll let you know how that goes.

If you'd like to contribute one of your experiences, reminders, any tool entry or just your thoughts to possibly help others make better use of Mood Sentry, please consider e-mailing the item (or your thoughts) to 4theblog@moodappsllc.com. I'll protect your privacy and keep the source anonymous.

Working Daily Goals on Vacation

I made the time to set some daily goals for tomorrow to help me have a better vacation.  I have a lot of things I'd like to do, and using the Daily Goals tool helped me organize the ones I want to address tomorrow and develop a realistic plan.  I'll work on the script for the updated videos I will create for Mood Sentry, I'll catch up on some reading that I've put off due to some recent demands of my regular job, and I'll be working on a new app concept.  I'll also make time for some physical activity and other fun stuff.  I can't recall ever using the Daily Goals feature while on vacation, but I think it makes sense in this instance.  I'll see how it works out.

On Vacation

Hi,

I'm currently on vacation, and as such may blog entries may and most probably will be sketchy for the next week or so.  I've recently updated both the iPhone and Android versions of Mood Sentry, mostly to fix bugs.  I hope you find these updates useful.  My need for Mood Sentry drops a bit during my vacations, but doesn't disappear.  I still need to keep my mood in check and referencing My Experiences as well as reviewing some of my entries is often a good thing to do.  However, because the pressure to perform is non-existent during times like this, the thoughts that typically set me off just don't come up that often.  I've mentioned that I'm working on some entries related to some of my recent challenges, and I'll continue to work on those.  I'll see if I can post one of those entries before my vacation ends.  I think doing that will be a good thing.

If you'd like to contribute one of your experiences, reminders, any tool entry or just your thoughts to possibly help others make better use of Mood Sentry, please consider e-mailing the item (or your thoughts) to 4theblog@moodappsllc.com. I'll protect your privacy and keep the source anonymous.

iTunes update is Available, the Android Fix is Available

What a week.  Both version of the app had problems, with the iPhone version being the most significant.  Both fixes are now available.  Again, I apologize for the inconvenience.  I handled this past week fairly well from a mood management standpoint.  I almost posted my thoughts on this blog and requested your input on counter thoughts, but opted not to do that primarily because I forgot once I started typing.  I'm still working on some inputs related to the iOS 7 issue as well as a couple of thoughts related to a core belief I've been challenging recently.  It's a real stubborn one.  I'll post that one soon, because it's one of my first Auto Thoughts tool entry and I want to show how I'm using that tool.  Stay tuned.

Working on an Autothought in Android and found a Bug

The bug makes it impossible to save your counter thoughts in the Auto Thoughts tool.  I'll get this fixed in a day or so.  I noticed this when working on an auto thought entry related to arriving at work.  I thought I saved the counter thoughts, exited the tool, and when I re-entered I noticed the counter thoughts were not there.  Like I said, this should be a quick fix but it's late so rather than fix it when I'm tired I'll fix it tomorrow when I'm fresh.

Regarding the iOS 7 update.  It's still in review.  It'll be available on iTunes just as soon as Apple allows it.

No change in App Status - Still in Review

The iOS 7 update is still in review by the good people at apple.  I set it to be immediately available upon approval by Apple, which is about the best I can do.

Other than that, I'm still working on some entries related to this event on my version of Mood Sentry, and I think it's coming along.  Usually, it takes several iterations for me to develop an entry and really capture what thoughts were going through my head.  I know some people that can write first drafts that are succinct and coherent, but I'm not one of them.  That doesn't matter though, because I really only write these for myself.  That's one of the benefits of having this tool, Mood Sentry, on my phone.  I can update and refine my entries at my convenience.  I hope you find that feature useful too.

If you'd like to contribute one of your experiences, reminders, any tool entry or just your thoughts to possibly help others make better use of Mood Sentry, please consider e-mailing the item (or your thoughts) to 4theblog@moodappsllc.com. I'll protect your privacy and keep the source anonymous.

iOS 7 Version is In Review

The update for iOS 7 is in review.  This usually takes a couple of days.  There was one update that was rejected because I didn't have all the display optimized for the larger screens, but I addressed that fairly quickly.  I'm not expecting any issues with this update and have been "playing" with it on my test device that runs iOS 7.  In the meantime, I'm working on an Event Log related to this experience and will share it with you when it gets a little more developed.

iOS 7 Update Submitted to Apple for Review

Again, my apologies for not checking the app sooner against iOS 7.  I spent the weekend working on fixes, which turned out to only require minor tweaks, but these tweaks affected just about every piece of source code in the app.  Yikes.  I took the opportunity to clean up the code so future updates will be a bit easier.  I submitted the update to the iTunes store.  The process is that Apple will review it, and if all is OK, the app will be for release as soon as they give me the OK.  So what's different?

The hints, options, and selector (the drop down menus we use to select items to display) are all updated.  One update was required to access the "Done" button at the bottom of the view.  Accessing this button is what caused the app to crash in iOS 7.  I fixed that.  There were some other coding changes I did to make it easier to update these temporary views in the future.  Then I updated the look.  Rather than keeping the dark background of Mood Sentry, I now use a light background which keeps me in line with how Apple would like these temporary views to look.

The menu bar at the bottom of the screen is different.  We used to have button down there, and I worked really hard to get those buttons to look consistent and fit across the bottom of the screen.  Well, in iOS 7, Apple re-did the buttons so they don't look like buttons, just text you can tap.  Each button has its own width, and they seem to fit across the bottom of the page.  It looks good.

Top navigation bar and bottom tool bar are now black, instead of the blue they were before.  I'm not sure I'm crazy about that, but I'll keep it for the time being.  Note that this was a choice I made.  I think the default is white now.  There were some other structural changes to the main View Controller that I needed so that the elements in the display fit properly on the screen.

I updated the screen shots too, which was something I forgot to do on the last update.  And I updated the program I use to develop Mood Sentry for the iPhone, which means I now have a built in emulator for iOS 7.  I'll keep that program up to date in the future.  I'll post when the update is release.

Update: iOS7 Version

I think I have just about everything working for the iOS 7 version.  It's working and looks OK.  I still have some clean up to do, and since I edited just about every routine in the app, I want to do some more testing before I submit this to iTunes for publication.  The general process is I'll submit the app, Apple will review it and tell me if it's OK.  If all is good, the process usually takes a couple of days.

So, how have I been doing?  Lots of distorted thoughts associated with this mistake.  Should statements, such as "I should have tested this earlier."  Some labeling such as "I'm too lazy, that's why I didn't download the iOS 7 emulators."  Forecasting/all of nothing: "I'm never going to get this fixed."  Magnification, "I'm going to have to shut the business down because of this."   I've mostly been attacking the should statements.  I'm human and should make mistakes.  Yes, I need to fix this, but that's what people do when they make mistakes.  I honestly didn't think the app would be so buggy in iOS 7.  Had I known that, I certainly would have fixed it.

Note that I found and fixed a bug too.  It seems the time displayed in the reminders always shows "pm" regardless of the time you set.  If you set the reminder for 7am, the display will show 7pm (note that the alarm will be set for 7am).

iOS7 Update is being Developed!!!

Friends,
I appears that it would have been better for me to test Mood Sentry on iOS7 rather than simply assume that the app will work fine and I could tweak it later.  It appears that Mood Sentry will crash if you try to run it on iOS7.  I'm working on the updates now, and so far it seem that I just have to re-index some values (e.g. I was specifying "1" and now I need to specify "2") and there will be some interface adjustments too.  Your data are SAFE.  I'll work this change ASAP, but I won't release it until I have had a chance to really test it.

Please accept my apologies for the inconvenience this is causing you.

I'll keep you posted on my progress.

Busy Day Today

I took half of Wednesday and all of Thursday off this week to compensate for working over the weekend.  When I got in to work this morning, I had a bunch of e-mails and some urgent things to address.  I had a feeling that there would be lots to do, so I made sure I took the time to review my experiences and thought about how some of them might pop up again today.  It helped.  I thought about a recent error I had made and the should statements that could manifest if that error came up again (I should have known better) and I also thought about that error and how magnification might pop up.  It really was a minor error and was managed very well by the team.  We had an important product to deliver this past week and delivered it on time, in spite of the error, which is a really good thing.  I'm still feeling a lot of stress at work due to other projects I'm supporting, but this delivery really helps reduce the overall stress level.  I set some goals last night for today and I hit them all.  Setting the goals, reviewing My Experiences and reviewing some entries I have been working on really helped me prepare for this day.  I think I had just about all the important things done by 3:30pm.  Not bad.

Still Working on the New Entries

They are coming along.  One is a Auto Thought, and the other is an Observation.  They are similar, and may simply be two different approaches to looking at the same thought.  We'll see how they develop and I'll probably post both once I get them polished a bit more.

Other than that, I've started the scripts for the new videos.  A more correct statement might be that I've started editing the old scripts to represent the current version of the app.  The videos were created some time ago.  I'm looking forward to creating these new videos.

Going to be Updating the Videos Soon

The videos are due for an update.  I need to get an iPhone example out there as well as show off the new interface.  It may take a couple of weeks because I'll be using my mac and have yet to make a video on that device, but my guess is that it will be fairly straight forward.  My plan is to have more than just two videos like I have now, but they'll all be of a shorter duration.  I'll announce on this post when I get that done.

Started a New Observation Today

I had to capture a thought and so I started a new Observation today.  It was one of those kind of obvious thoughts, but for some reason struck a chord and I wanted to capture it.  What happened was I thought to myself "I feel like something bad is going to happen."  Which is a typical Monday morning feeling for me.  Then I realized that I didn't really capture what was going on in my head.  A more complete description would have been "I feel anxious, because I think something bad is going to happen."  This change helped me clarify the feeling as well as the thought.  This just seems like a better way to capture the actual feeling and drive the point that the thought is the catalyst for the feeling.  I was working on this entry this evening, and noticed that I started a similarly themed Auto Thoughts entry.  I think I'll work this on both tools and see how each develops.  Quite often I find that  one tool is better at capturing and countering a thought than another, but I may have to develop the thought in each tool before the best choice becomes obvious.

Working on a Barriers and Breakthroughs Entry

It's related to the example, but more task oriented.  There's a task I needed to work on this morning and I just had a tough time motivating myself to attack it.  The thoughts were that if I started working on it I wouldn't be able to complete it.  Why? Because it was beyond my abilities or something like that.  I'm still working on this and trying to get my hands around the thoughts that were driving my mood.  I'll probably share this one at a later date as another example.  Other than that, it's Sunday night.  Time for me to set a couple of goals for tomorrow and get some sleep.  This major task I'm supporting this week will finish this week and we really need to polish our paper we'll submit.  So far, I've done a fairly descent job of managing my thoughts and mood.

Task Timer

I've used this tool for a work task recently.  I download my project data, the hours people have spent on it and costs, weekly to stay on top of my spending.  This usually takes 15-20 minutes and involves downloading the data, reformatting it, plotting it, and then looking it over.  On the day I used the Task Timer tool it took about 47 minutes.  I predicted 20.  Before starting this task I identified how I think things would go and afterward I noted how things actually went.  When I designed the tool I was wondering how I would react if things took much longer than anticipated, and I imagined that I'd get upset with myself for one reason or another.  In this situation, I did not get upset at all.  The reason for the delay was partly a mistake and partly a need to add some new project data that I didn't anticipate.  I thought about deleting this entry and re-generating the task time on a more typical day, but I decided against that.  This entry represents more of a worst case scenario, and the time really isn't that bad.  My forecasts of not getting anything done or spending my whole day on one task can't stand up to data like this.  47 minutes, worst case, means I just about always have plenty of time during my day to get other activities done.  I didn't think I'd use the tool like this when I built it.

Been Very Busy at my Other Job this Week

I have a major project that is due and really need to focus on that.  So how's the app helping?  It helps me stay focused, jogs my memory on how I can deal with the distortions that come up, and helps me prepare for thoughts that have popped up in similar situations.  I have to admit that I haven't been referencing it three times a day, but I've been using it for so long I have that high points down pat for me.  I can remember most of the details in My Experiences and run through them in my head, as well as remember some of my Essays and Observations.  That helps in hectic times like this.  However, I really do get something out of taking the time to review what I've recorded over the past couple of years and I'll get back to doing that when things settle a bit.

One Thing at a Time

As I've posted recently, I have a lot going on at work these days.  What's really helping me navigate each day is working one thing at a time.  What this does for me is creates quick successes and makes me see that I've accomplished something each day.  This as opposed to working on something, then putting it down to work on something else, then returning to the original something, or yet another task.  I'm not sure if this warrants a new tool or perhaps I need to capture this in an essay.  I'll think about it.  In the meantime, I'll look for ways to "chunk" my time into short but meaningful tasks I can knock out.

Struggled a Bit Today

I really had to stay on top of my thoughts today.  I'd find myself thinking that things are going to get out of hand and "blow up." That I won't complete what I need to complete.  I fought these thoughts by focusing on one task at a time and completing that one task.  This went on for much of the day.  Toward the end of the day I received an e-mail telling me that I used the wrong template for a document that's kind of big, and I need to re-build the document.  That drove some thoughts involving should statement and magnifications.  What I did was buckle down and start rebuilding the document.  I think I can finish the job fairly quickly tomorrow and get back to where I should be.  I actually made a lot of progress today.  It would have been better had I recognized the wrong template, but it is what it is and I need to fix it as quickly and accurately as I can.  There's other stuff going on at work, such as one project taking longer than expected to complete.  But some stuff is getting done as needed, and I think we'll be fine on all my projects.

Feeling Anxious

I had this feeling of anxiety throughout the day.  Lots of thoughts running through my head, mostly that I wasn't going to get a task completed that was due today.  I have multiple things on my plate, and the tough part is prioritizing things when they are all important.  Looking back on my day, I challenged a lot of thoughts, I got away from my desk at lunch, and I finished the task that was due.  It's the hectic pace that is getting me these days, but I'll keep working on my thoughts and address what bubbles up.  The thing that keeps me going is knowing that much of the stress will evaporate in about a week, when one of the projects is due.

Had an OK Day

I had this nagging thought that I should spend more time on work related activities today.  I just felt that there was so much stuff I need to do, that I'd never get it all done.  To address these distortions, I made a brief list of what I thought I needed to accomplish.  I set a goal of reducing my workload on Monday to make sure I had time to address pop-up crises/requests.  This helped.  When I keep everything in my head I loose track of some of the items and I start to feel overwhelmed.  When I write things down, I can keep track of the important items and can visualize myself completing them.  Setting the goal to reduce my workload helped too.  Just completing one thing means I achieved my goal, and every accomplishment after that helps even more.  I managed to keep the thoughts regarding should work more and never getting everything done in check, but they were still in my head, lurking in the background.

Looking For Ideas

I think I've posted that I neglected to update the screenshots in the iPhone version of MoodSentry before I submitted it for review, and as such the screen shots in iTunes are of the old version, not the new version.  The only way I can update them is if I upload a new version.  I'm looking for ideas on what you'd like to see, if anything.  Is there a tool concept you'd like to see?  Is there something simple I can do that would help make MoodSentry easier to use?  Drop me note if you have any thoughts on improvements I can make.

Eternal Vigilance?

Sometimes it feels like Eternal Vigilance is the price I need to pay to keep me mood in check.  Thinking about that, it really isn't that bad.  I'm getting better at catching those thoughts that can drive me to a lower mood, and I'll keep working at it. Other people have other issues and need to work their program every day, such as those with Type 1 Diabetes.  Alcoholics have their crosses to bear, every day.  And there are more ailments and conditions that need to be addressed on a daily basis.  Hmmm.  Maybe my issues are different, but needing to work a program every day is not a unique experience.  I have my app, and I have other resources to help me address and overcome my dysfunctional thoughts.  I guess it's not so bad.

Has Anyone Tried any of the New Tools?

I just want to check tonight to see if anyone has tried any of the new tools. I'm wondering if they are helpful, or at least usable.  In particular the Task Timer.  That's the most complex tool I have, I think.  I just used it the other day on a task I perform once a week.  Any feedback would be appreciated.

Reviewed a Bunch of Events this Evening

I reviewed a bunch of entries in my Event Log this evening.  It's been a while since I reviewed some of them.  I tend to spend more time with my Essays and Observation Logs.  Anyway, reviewing the Event Log was good and revealed a bit how I've changed over the past couple of years.  I can see lots of Forecasting in some of those earlier entries in regards to interpreting other people's actions.  I still do that, but not as often as I used to. I also had multiple entries related to Overgeneralizing one-off or short term events.  I do less of that to.  Not none of it, but less of it.  That's a good thing.  One of the benefits of having a log like this is the ability to review past entries and see how or if things have improved.

Nothing Bad Happened Today

I had these feelings that things were going to get out of hand today, but things went OK.  Not great, but stable and manageable.  I worked over the 3 day weekend to free up time to work on things that might pop up, and when things did pop up I had the time to address them.  I reviewed Mood Sentry in the morning, at noon(ish), and this evening, which helped me get my thoughts together and mitigate but not eliminate those feelings that "things are going to get out of hand."  Tomorrow is a night's sleep away.  I updated my goals for tomorrow, which was easy because they are pretty much the same as today.  I have meeting first thing in the morning that could turn into conflict, but I think it too will go OK.  I'll review my forecasting mitigation techniques in the morning.  That usually helps.

Ran Into a Problem with a Website this Evening

One of my volunteer activities is to maintain a website for a non-profit, environmentally focused organization.  This evening I was updating the site and noticed that in two places where we announce our upcoming activities, neither location was working properly.  I spent about 45 minutes trying to fix the site and finally put in a request for help.  I'm forecasting conflict because I need help from one of two support groups and thus anticipating that they will each point the finger at the other.  I'm also finding myself using "should" statements in regard to the system we're using for the website, more specifically that we "should" have chosen another system.  I have more thoughts that I just don't have time for this.  I can counter each of these.  Such as it's just as likely that one of the two groups will see my problem and point me in the right direction.  More likely they will want to know what, if anything has changed recently.  Regarding the should statement, it might have been better had a different system been chosen, but this one was free and it has a lot of capability.  Not having the time?  It's true that I'm very busy with work right now, and I see this continuing for the next few weeks, but this might be fixable with a minimal amount of effort.  I really don't know how long it will take.  I think I can hold off judgement until I learn more and then figure out how I can fit it into my schedule.

Had a Good Day

I laid out some goals in the Daily Goals tool and basically hit them all.  I still have those thoughts popping into my head I described the other day, over generalizations, as well as some forecasting, but I'm countering them with more realistic thoughts.  That's helping.  I did go into work today and have found that during times like this, times with lots of stuff going on at work, it helps to do some work every day.  We'll see how this all turns out in a couple of weeks.  Right now it's looking like there is still a lot of work to do.
